Gutters do one job: move water away from your house. In Maine, that job is bigger than most places. A spring thaw can send weeks of melting snow off the roof in a few days, and a nor'easter can drop inches of rain in an afternoon.
When gutters are undersized, clogged or pulling away from the house, that water ends up where it shouldn't: behind the fascia, down the siding, into the basement, and frozen along the eaves where it feeds ice dams. Good gutters protect the roof edge, the walls and the foundation all at once.

Built for Midcoast Maine weather
We live and work here, so we know what Maine asks of a roof. Along the coast, salt air and nor'easters test every edge and seam. Inland, it's heavy snow, ice dams and freeze-thaw cycles that do the damage.
Gutters here take a beating from sliding snow and ice, so how they're hung matters as much as what they're made of. We size the gutters and downspouts for the roof area above them, use heavy-duty hangers spaced for snow load, and pitch every run so water actually reaches the downspout. From Belfast to Bangor and from Brunswick to Bar Harbor, we've seen what works and what doesn't.
What we install
Seamless aluminum gutters. Formed on site to the exact length of your roofline, so there are no seams to leak except at the corners. Available in a wide range of colors to match your trim. We install 5-inch gutters on most homes and 6-inch where a large or steep roof calls for it.
Downspouts. Sized and placed so water leaves the roof fast and lands well away from the foundation, with extensions or splash blocks where they're needed.
Gutter guards. Covers that keep leaves, pine needles and debris out while letting water in, so you're not on a ladder every fall. We'll tell you honestly whether guards make sense for your house and which type suits your trees and roof.
Replacement and repair. Sagging runs, loose hangers, leaking corners and crushed downspouts can often be fixed. When gutters are rusted through or pulling away all along the house, replacement is the better fix.
If you're planning a roof replacement, that's the ideal time to do gutters too. The old ones come off with the roof, and the new ones go on once the drip edge is in place.
Do gutter guards work in Maine?
Usually, yes, with the right type for your house. Guards cut down on clogs from leaves and needles, which means fewer ladder trips and less water spilling over the edge in a downpour.
They're not magic, though. Fine debris and shingle grit can still build up on some styles, and no guard stops ice from forming in a gutter that's already full of frozen meltwater. Guards don't prevent ice dams. Attic insulation and ventilation do. We'll give you a straight answer on whether guards are worth it for your home, and which kind.
If your gutters are already damaged from ice or a fallen branch, that's often a roof repair question too, because the same ice that bends a gutter can lift the shingles above it. We'll check both.
Signs your gutters need attention
Water spilling over the front edge during rain, even when the gutters look clear.
Gutters pulling away from the fascia, sagging between hangers or visibly tilted.
Peeling paint, stains or rot on the fascia board behind the gutter.
Water pooling at the foundation, or a damp basement after storms.
Rust spots, cracks, or seams that drip after the rain stops.
Shingle granules collecting in the gutters, which is a sign of roof wear worth checking.
A quick look each spring and fall goes a long way. Here's our roof maintenance guide for the rest of the checklist.

Common Questions About Gutters
Still have questions?
Take a look at the answers here, or feel free to reach out anytime—we're happy to walk you through the details.
-
It depends on the length of the runs, the number of downspouts and corners, the gutter size and whether you add guards. Access and the height of the roofline matter too. We'll measure your home and give you a free, written estimate before any work starts.
-
For most Maine homes with trees nearby, yes. Guards keep out leaves and pine needles, so you spend less time on a ladder and gutters are less likely to overflow in a storm. They don't prevent ice dams, though, and some styles still need an occasional rinse. We'll tell you whether they make sense for your house.
-
No. Ice dams form when heat escaping into the attic melts snow that refreezes at the cold eaves. Guards can't stop that. Attic insulation, ventilation and ice-and-water shield under the shingles are what help. Gutters that drain well do reduce how much water sits and freezes at the edge.
-
Most Maine homes do well with 5-inch gutters. Larger or steeper roofs, and roofs with long runs that drain to one downspout, often need 6-inch gutters and bigger downspouts to keep up with heavy rain and snowmelt. We size them to the roof area above each run.
-
It's the ideal time. The old gutters usually come off with the roof, and new ones go on after the drip edge is installed, so everything lines up and drains the way it should. We'll quote both together so you can see the full picture.
-
Watch for water spilling over the front edge in rain, gutters sagging or pulling away from the house, stains or rot on the fascia behind them, and water pooling at the foundation. Shingle granules collecting in the gutters are a sign the roof itself is wearing.
-
Often we can repair them. Loose hangers, sagging runs, leaking corners and crushed downspouts are common fixes. If the gutters are rusted through, badly dented or pulling away all along the house, replacement is the better long-term fix.
-
Yes. We install gutters and downspouts on homes, businesses and town buildings across Midcoast Maine. Larger buildings often need bigger gutters and more downspouts, and we'll size the system to the roof.
