CLASSIC MAINE CHARACTER

We install natural cedar roofs on historic and coastal homes across Midcoast Maine and beyond. Based in Belfast, we're a family business with nearly two decades of experience in the roofing industry. For most Maine homes, a new cedar roof runs $20,000–$40,000 and lasts 20 to 30 years with regular care.

Nothing looks quite like a cedar roof. The grain, the texture and the way it weathers to a soft silver gray give a home a warmth no other material fully matches. On sea captains' houses, old capes and shingle-style cottages, it's often the roof the house was built for.

Cedar is also naturally resistant to rot and insects, and it's lighter than most roofing materials. With good installation and regular care, it can protect your home for 20 to 30 years in Maine.

It does ask more of you than other roofs. Plan on a check-up and light maintenance every two to three years. For many homeowners, the look is worth it. Financing is available, too. See your options.

Built for Midcoast Maine weather

We live and work here, so we know what Maine asks of a roof. Along the coast, salt air and nor'easters test every edge and seam. Inland, it's heavy snow, ice dams and freeze-thaw cycles that do the damage.

Cedar can handle all of it, but wood needs to dry out between storms. That's why airflow matters so much: under the cedar, through the attic and around the roof. Shaded north slopes and roofs under trees stay damp longest, so we'll talk with you about trimming branches and keeping moss in check. From Belfast to Bangor and from Brunswick to Bar Harbor, we've seen what works and what doesn't.

Shakes, shingles and the look you want

Cedar roofs come in two main styles. We'll help you choose the one that fits your home.

Cedar shakes are split from the log, so they're thicker, with a rough, rustic texture and deep shadow lines. They suit older farmhouses, cottages and homes where character comes first.

Cedar shingles are sawn, so they're thinner and smoother, with a tidier, more uniform look. They're common on New England capes and colonial homes.

Treated cedar. Cedar can be pressure-treated for added resistance to rot and fire, which can extend its life on damp Maine roofs.

New cedar starts out honey-toned and weathers to silver gray within a few years, especially near salt water. Living near the ocean affects every roof. Here's how salt air affects your roof.

What happens under the roof matters just as much

The cedar on top is only as good as the work underneath. In Maine's climate, what you can't see from the street decides whether your cedar roof lasts 20 years or 30.

We tear off every old roof. We remove the old roofing all the way down to the roof deck. That way we can check every board and replace any soft or rotted decking before it's sealed under your new roof. If we find rotted decking, it typically adds $1,000–$3,000 or more, and we'll show you exactly what we found before we fix it.

Then we build it back right.

  • Ice-and-water shield along the eaves, in the valleys and around chimneys, skylights and vents.

  • Space for air to move under the cedar, so the wood can dry after rain and snowmelt.

  • Attic ventilation checked and addressed on every project, because poor ventilation is a leading cause of ice dams and shorter roof life.

  • Stainless or hot-dipped galvanized fasteners that won't rust or stain the wood, especially near salt water. This is what we mean by "no detail too small." It's the work that's invisible from the street, but it's what separates a roof that performs from one that disappoints.

Real cedar vs. composite shake

If you love the look of cedar but worry about the upkeep, it's worth knowing how the two compare.

Real cedar gives you the genuine article: natural grain, natural weathering and a roof that's true to an older home. In return, it needs cleaning, moss control and occasional shake replacement every few years, and it usually lasts 20 to 30 years in Maine.

Composite shake is molded from real cedar and looks very close to it from the street. It won't rot, split or grow moss, needs almost no maintenance, and carries a 50-year limited warranty.

We install both. For historic homes where real wood matters, we're glad to install cedar. If you'd rather skip the upkeep, take a look at composite shake roofing.
