THE LOOK OF CEDAR, WITHOUT THE UPKEEP
We install Brava composite shake on homes across Midcoast Maine and beyond. Based in Belfast, we're a Brava Preferred Contractor, so your roof is installed to Brava's standards and backed by its 50-year limited warranty. Composite shake is typically priced close to natural cedar, about $20,000–$40,000 for most Maine homes.

Brava composite shake is made from recycled polymer and molded from real hand-split cedar, so it has the texture, thickness and color depth of the real thing. From the street, most people can't tell the difference.
The difference shows up over time. Real cedar soaks up Maine's rain, fog and snowmelt, then cracks, curls and grows moss as it freezes and thaws. Composite shake doesn't absorb water, so it doesn't rot, split or need treatments. It also carries a Class 4 impact rating (the highest there is) and a Class A fire rating.
It costs more upfront than asphalt shingles. In return, you get the look of cedar with a 50-year limited warranty and almost no upkeep. Financing is available, too. See your options.

Built for Midcoast Maine weather
We live and work here, so we know what Maine asks of a roof. Along the coast, salt air and nor'easters test every edge and seam. Inland, it's heavy snow, ice dams and freeze-thaw cycles that do the damage.
That's where composite shake earns its keep. It handles freeze-thaw without cracking, it won't hold moisture on shaded north slopes the way wood does, and salt air doesn't break it down. It's also a natural fit for older Maine homes, from sea captains' houses in Camden to capes in Belfast, where a cedar look matters. From Belfast to Bangor and from Brunswick to Bar Harbor, we've seen what works and what doesn't.

Styles and colors we install
Brava shakes come in three widths (5, 7 and 12 inches) that we mix across the roof, the way real cedar is laid, so no two courses look alike. Matching hip, ridge and starter pieces finish every edge, so the roof looks like cedar all the way to the peak.
Colors. Brava offers colors from fresh-cut cedar tones to the silvery gray of weathered shakes, plus blends that mix the two.
Slate look. Brava also makes a composite slate tile, for homes where slate fits better than shake.
We'll bring samples so you can see what looks best against your home. Colors on a screen never tell the full story. For a deeper look, read our guide to composite shake roofing.
What happens under the roof matters just as much
The shakes on top are only as good as the work underneath. In Maine's climate, what you can't see from the street decides how well your roof performs for the next 50 years.
We tear off every old roof. We remove the old roofing all the way down to the roof deck. That way we can check every board and replace any soft or rotted decking before it's sealed under your new roof. If we find rotted decking, it typically adds $1,000–$3,000 or more, and we'll show you exactly what we found before we fix it.
Then we build it back right.
Ice-and-water shield along the eaves, in the valleys and around chimneys, skylights and vents.
Attic ventilation checked and addressed on every project, because poor ventilation is a leading cause of ice dams and shorter roof life.
Every shake installed to Brava's specifications, which is what keeps the full warranty in place.
Flashing at every chimney, wall and valley, so water has nowhere to go but off the roof.
This is what we mean by "no detail too small." It's the work that's invisible from the street, but it's what separates a roof that performs from one that disappoints.
Composite shake vs. real cedar
If you love the look of cedar, it's worth knowing how the two compare.
Real cedar is beautiful, and nothing else is quite the same. But in Maine it usually lasts 20 to 30 years and needs cleaning, treatments and shake replacement every few years. Shaded and coastal roofs tend to wear out sooner.
Composite shake gives you nearly the same look with a 50-year limited warranty and almost no maintenance. It won't rot, split, curl or grow moss.
We install both. For historic homes where real wood matters, cedar can be the right call. For most homeowners who want the look without the upkeep, we recommend composite. Here's more on cedar shake roofing.

-
Composite shake is a synthetic roofing tile made to look like real cedar shake. Brava's shakes are made from recycled polymer and molded from real hand-split cedar, so they have the same texture and depth without the rot, splitting or upkeep of wood.
-
Brava composite shake carries a 50-year limited warranty. It doesn't absorb water, so it holds up to Maine's freeze-thaw cycles without cracking, curling or rotting the way natural cedar does.
-
For most Maine homes, composite shake is priced close to natural cedar, about $20,000 to $40,000. That's more than asphalt shingles at $10,000 to $25,000, but composite needs almost no maintenance and is warrantied for 50 years.
-
Yes. Brava molds its shakes from real cedar, and we install them in mixed widths, the way natural shakes are laid. From the street, most people can't tell the difference. We'll bring samples so you can see it up close.
-
Yes. Composite shake doesn't absorb moisture, so freeze-thaw cycles, damp shaded slopes and salt air don't break it down. Brava shakes also carry a Class 4 impact rating, the highest available.
-
Brava's full 50-year limited warranty depends on the roof being installed to its specifications. As a Brava Preferred Contractor, we install every roof the way Brava requires, so your warranty coverage is protected.

Yes. Every composite shake roof we install starts with removing the old roofing down to the deck. That lets us find and replace any soft or rotted decking and install new ice-and-water shield and underlayment, so your new roof starts on a solid base.
-
Yes. We work with two lenders. Wisetack covers projects up to $25,000, and HFS Financial offers terms up to 20 years, which helps with larger projects. Pre-qualifying with either one won't affect your credit score.
