Is Standing Seam Metal Roofing Worth the Investment?
It costs more up front than asphalt. No question. On the Maine coast it also lasts a lot longer, sheds snow better, and can pay for itself if you stay in the house.
This is the honest version: typical cost, lifespan, who it is right for, and when we still recommend shingles.
Quick take
Sheet numbers we use in conversation (typical residential, not a bid):
Asphalt: about $8,000–$15,000, 20-30 year lifespan, lots of colors, right for most homes
Standing seam metal: about $15,000–$30,000, 40-60+ years, stronger wind and weather resistance, almost no yearly upkeep
National planning ranges from RoofVista put standing seam metal around $15,000–$25,000 for a 1,500 sq ft roof in 2026, versus architectural shingles at $7,000–$12,000. Your Mid-Coast quote will move with pitch, tear-off, decking, and coastal hardware. Treat those as ranges, not a price.
What standing seam actually is
Vertical metal panels lock together at raised seams. Fasteners hide under the seam, so you are not staring at a grid of screws. That is different from exposed-fastener (screw-down) metal, which is cheaper and more maintenance over time.
We install both asphalt and standing seam. We are not trying to talk every house into metal.
Where the extra money goes
You pay more for panels, coatings, custom flashing, and labor that has to be precise. Cut-up roofs with lots of valleys and dormers cost more in metal because every transition is fabricated, not just shingled through.
Sheffield Metals is blunt about the cases where metal is a poor fit: tight budget, ultra-low slope, a roof chopped into tiny planes, or a short stay in the house. That matches what we tell homeowners in Belfast, Camden, Boothbay, and the islands.
Maine coast reasons metal can win
Lifespan. One metal roof can cover two asphalt cycles if you stay 30+ years.
Snow and ice. Smooth panels shed snow. Ice still happens. Snow guards matter on walkways and entries.
Wind. Standing seam is a strong coastal option when the coating, substrate, and fasteners are rated for salt. See How Salt Air Affects Your Roof.
Maintenance. No granule loss. You still inspect flashings, penetrations, and fasteners.
When asphalt is the better call
You may sell in the next 5-10 years and need the lower ticket
The roof is complex and metal labor would balloon
You want a traditional shingle look
The existing deck or structure is not ready for a premium system without extra work
Architectural shingles with a real wind rating still do excellent work on Mid-Coast homes. We wrote about replacement timing in When Should You Replace Your Roof Before Winter.
Who it is really right for
Long stay. Coastal weather you are tired of fighting. Budget that can absorb the up-front jump (Wisetack / 0% options exist when they fit). A roof shape that is not a maze of tiny panels.
If you are on the fence, a free estimate is the useful next step. Larkin walks the roof and attic, we photograph what we find, and you get a written number for both paths when it makes sense. About 15-20 minutes of your time. Call (207) 200-1053 or use the contact page.
